Now that we’re three episodes into recording, we thought it would be a good time to tell you exactly what our plan is! So far, we have recorded Rodney Barnes, Marc Guggenheim, and Kelly Sue DeConnick. And let’s not forget our live panel event with Stephan Franck and Ray-Anthony Height last weekend, which was recorded.
You want to know when you can listen to these, right? Can’t blame you. Our plan is to bank season one, which is six episodes (and a bonus live episode), and then release them weekly. We’re halfway there, with our fourth happening this week (Marjorie Liu), our fifth happening next week (Matt Kindt), and our sixth (Patrick McDonnell) is still being scheduled, but hopefully happening shortly after.
In the meantime, while we do these, Bryant Dillon from Fanbase Press, our Season One Title Sponsor, is editing the episodes. So all is in motion! And it’s coming together quickly. It’s a team effort that takes some work, seeing as how everyone, from the co-hosts to the guests to even the podcast editor, is on different schedules. And honestly…it’s super fun. We’re all having a blast!
Now, let’s get into Kelly Sue DeConnick's profile! Who IS Kelly Sue? Since we don’t talk about comics on the podcast, these substacks are our way of letting fans know who these professionals are in the entertainment industry and why we want to talk to them about their outside fandoms.
Kris Simon first became aware of Kelly Sue from her Image Comics series Bitch Planet, which came out from 2015-2017. It’s everything you would think it’s about, which is to say that it takes place in a dystopian reality where non-compliant women are sent to an off-planet prison. It’s incredible, highly recommend.
Kelly Sue is now known for writing the character Carol Danvers, which became the version most adapted for the Captain Marvel movie, which came out in 2019. Kelly Sue drew upon her own past as inspiration, which goes to show you…write what you know!
But if you think Marvel was the only publisher that was significantly impacted by Kelly Sue’s writing, you would be wrong. In 2021-2022, Kelly Sue also became known for her three-issue run on the Eisner-winning Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons, wherein she created the history of the Amazons and the tale of how Hippolyta became queen. This was done for the 80th anniversary of Wonder Woman, which is pretty rad.

So Kelly Sue managed to dominate at Image, Marvel, and DC. What more could possibly be left? We’re so glad you asked! Her current project is called FML. It’s an eight-issue series released by Dark Horse that reunites her with her collaborative partner from Captain Marvel, David López. The series is described as a “surreal coming-of-age story” about the relationship between a mother and son, taking place in Portland against the backdrop of wildfires, the pandemic, and active-shooter drills at school. Kelly Sue is again drawing on her personal experiences to create a compelling original narrative, her first since Bitch Planet. This series is rad, go check it out if you haven’t yet.
Kelly Sue also uses her powers for good. Using her popularity, she vocally champions women in the industry. She started the #visiblewomen movement on Twitter (X) to show just how many women are in the industry and how easy it is to hire them. She helped found the Creators for Creators non-profit organization that mentors and gives grants to new artists. And a big supporter of the Bechdel Test, she created a similar test called the “Sexy Lamp Test,” where she declared that if you could replace your character with a sexy lamp and the story still works, you need to do another draft because female characters are protagonists, not objects. (cheering in the distance)
It’s so amazing to have such notable guests on the Superfan Podcast. It may seem a little odd not to discuss all these achievements, but that’s what sets this podcast apart. And we can guarantee that you will not expect what Kelly Sue will be talking about!
