The Superfan Podcast recorded our first episode last night with Marc Guggenheim, an Emmy Award-winning writer who writes for multiple mediums, including television, film, video games, comic books, and new media. His work includes projects for such popular franchises as Percy Jackson, Star Wars, Call of Duty, Star Trek, and Planet of the Apes. He is also a novelist, his most recent novel being In Any Lifetime.
Marc joined us to talk about his love of Billy Joel music. Now, if you’re not a fan of Billy Joel, I can guarantee you will still want to listen to Marc on this podcast. As a matter of fact, if you are a superfan of anything, you will enjoy this episode. While recording this, we were constantly reminded of why we decided to pursue speaking to your favorite creators about what they are superfans of outside of comics. The absolute joy, enthusiasm, and excitement that emanates from the guests is contagious! And let me tell you, Marc had some absolutely amazing stories to tell.

What makes this such a great first episode is that your co-hosts, Christian Gossett, Kris Simon, and David Hyde, are at three different degrees of Billy Joel fandom: Christian Gossett is a native New Yorker who knew some deep-cut anecdotes about Billy Joel, Kris Simon who had just seen him in concert for the first time, a little over a year ago, and David Hyde who knew next to nothing about Billy Joel, aside from who he is and his greatest hits. This means that regardless of where you are in your Billy Joel knowledge, we hope you will find the conversation as entertaining as we did.
You can stay updated on Guggenheim’s latest projects by subscribing to his Substack LegalDispatch, a newsletter in which he shares news and notes about writing, comics, and the entertainment industry.
Stay tuned to this space to find out when Marc Guggenheim’s episode goes live! We’ll send out another newsletter then, which will include a vodka cocktail recipe inspired by the Piano Man’s lyrics, “Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness. But it's better than drinkin' alone.” It will also include a dessert recipe to pair with it, based on Billy Joel’s song titled “Vienna,” which is his favorite song he’s ever written, inspired by his father, and a salute to his half-brother Alexander Joel, who was a conductor at the Vienna Volksoper, an opera house in Vienna.
